"Rick Remender is a horrible writer."

Hi there, Fear Agent, Uncanny X-Force, Black Science, Deadly Class, and Venom would like to have a fucking word with you.

They might mean Captain America? I know a lot of long-time Cap readers who have dropped the title due to Remender’s writing. I’m one of them, and I can give you reasons why I dropped it if you like. I understand a lot of people are also upset about his run on Uncanny Avengers.

From what I’ve seen, people like his runs on those comics. Different strokes for different folks I guess.

Sales for Captain America have dropped significantly since Rick Remender took over the title. Many people dislike how he killed Sharon Carter, Scarlet Witch, and Rogue within two months of each other for no other reason than to cause the men in the series pain, which is the textbook definition of fridging. Rick Remender has denied these charges, yet by his own admission in interviews has admitted to doing just that - he just doesn’t call it fridging.

You evidently like his writing, and that’s great. But his writing on Captain America, which I don’t know if you’ve been reading, has been terrible enough to turn me off all of his titles, and I’m not the only one. It’s one of the reasons I suggested the people calling him a horrible writer might be referencing that title, where he not only kills off a female character (he also killed off two male characters; one remained dead for three issues, and the other is Zola, who will likely be back), but hypersexualizes a fourteen-year-old girl whose superpowers are stronger the more naked she is.

His writing on Captain America shows a disturbing lack of familiarity with canon. It’s been established since Volume 1 over twenty years ago that Steve likes old radio show posters, and that’s what he decorates his apartment with. In Vol 7, Remender’s volume, Steve suddenly has Nazi paraphernalia decorating his place. And I don’t mean a little trophy from the battlefront, I mean huge, pristine Nazi flags draped from floor to ceiling. Something Steve had NEVER had previously.

Dimension Z is the same story as the Savage Land arc from volume 3 by Mark Waid. The villain is different, but the villain is doing the exact same thing - experimenting on the local wildlife to add to their own power. It has the same Cap canon characters - Sharon and Steve, and Steve briefly raises someone else’s son in both arcs.

One of the constants of Captain America is how Steve struggles to uphold ideals that people can look up to. Remender comes along, and now Steve is considering darkening up Cap’s image.

We can go into specifics about the different arcs and how they don’t make sense? Like the timeline for Dimension Z, where time passes at a ratio of twelves years in Dimension Z time to half an hour in our time. We know this because Steve has been there for twelve years, merely struggling to survive and help his son survive, when Sharon Carter shows up and insists it’s only been half an hour. She made her way to another dimension, found out who the bad guy was, found out his plan, planted explosives around the base, and saved Steve all within half an hour. Logically, this makes no sense. She might have found the way to the other dimension in half an hour, but then she would have been caught up in the time difference as well. Remender could have accomplished the same effect by saying Steve had been there two hours (the world doesn’t change all that much in two hours, after all), or had the time shift been revealed after Steve got out of Dimension Z, but he wanted the WOW factor, so he made a point of having Sharon say it. The implication is that Steve is a moron who can barely manage to survive for TWELVE YEARS in hostile conditions, but Sharon, a woman with no super soldier serum, manages to do his mission in half an hour. It’s painting Steve has oddly incapable (usually, he is extremely capable) and makes it seem odd that Sharon would be killed in an explosion that she set herself, yet Remender insists that he won’t bring her back.

He also has no intention of remembering her in the comics. Steve spoken of or thought of her three times since her death, yet she was a Director of SHIELD. One of the few to have died, if not the only one. But Remender hasn’t even mentioned that, likely because he isn’t aware of it.

Here’s another post about some of the things he’s done, complete with links.

So yes, his writing on the titles were he doesn’t need a previous knowledge of canon may be good. But his work on Captain America is atrocious. The people who like his books are in a minority, but the people who dislike it don’t dislike it merely because it’s a matter of different strokes for different folks. They dislike it because they’ve got plenty of reason to, and Remender’s Cap is turning potential readers off his other work when it should be doing the opposite.

Sorry to prattle on about this, but the people you posted about aren’t just saying that because they don’t know what they’re talking about. They’re saying it because, if they’ve been reading Rick Remender’s run of Captain America, HE doesn’t know what he’s talking about.

On the bright side, when they relaunch Cap, you’ll be able to read it and enjoy it again :)
